Because in the 1800's most of them WERE black.

Intermarriage with whites has resulted in their now being called Mulatto, or moreno, in Spanish.

I guess mezcla? would work too; "mixed".

well I don't know about what they refer ed to blacks as in the 1800's but it should have been that man or that women. The Spanish word for black is alto of them: moyo, *****, moreno. I speak a spanglish.a little.
