There are 7.48 gallons in a cu. ft. so if you can figure its volume (in cu. ft.), you just multiply by 7.48 to get gallons.

For example, if you had a pool that was 10 ft. x 20 ft. and 4 ft. deep, the volume is 800 cu. ft. (Volume of a rectangular prism is H x W x L.)

800 cu. ft. x 7.48 gallons/cu. ft. = 5,984 gallons

If you have a pipe or a circular pool, you would need to figure the volume of a cylinder. Let's say you have a pool that has a radius of 5 ft and a depth of 3 feet. The volume is 3 x pi x 5² = 75 pi = 235.62 cu. ft. (Volume of a cylinder is pi x R² x H).

235.62 cu. ft. x 7.48 gallons/cu. ft. = 1,762 gallons

The hardest part is figuring the volume, then the conversion to gallons is easy.

If it is impractical to measure the container and work out its volume that way - weigh the container (in pounds) then fill it with water and weigh it again. Take away the weight of the container and divide the answer you get by 10 and this will give you the number of gallons. A gallon of water weighs exactly 10 pounds.

first, you have to figure out a way to measure the weight or the volume of the liquid in the container at capacity

assuming that the liquid is fresh water,1 gallon
weighs 10 pounds

for any liquid,1 gallon=277.3 cu inches=0.1604 cu ft
or 1 cu ft=6.234 gallons

once you know the capacity of the container, the amount
of gallons can be calculated

i hope that this helps

a gallon is 231 cubic inches. Measure the "sumthing" H x W x L and figure how many cubic inches it has then divide it by 231.

Fill "sumthing" up and see how many gallons are in it when it is full.

you're looking for volume and that's h x l x w. if you have an odd shaped object the formula is very different but you might be able to get something close enough.
