I served in the military for more than two decades and I would have died for my country. I am a firefighter and would rather die than have a child die in a fire. I have lived much longer than my children and would gladly and willingly put my life on the line to save any of them. If my wife were to die, I would already be dead, so yes, without a doubt I would die to protect her life. I do not crave hero status, but I would much rather my death mean something to someone that to die to something stupid like getting hit by a drunk driver or falling off a bar stool reaching for a beer...

I would really die for either of my parents or my little brother. Probably my boyfriend because I love him to death and couldn't imagine being without him. And I would for my family because I love my parents so much and I would rather me die then my brother finish growing up without one of my parents. and I would for my brother because he is the sweetest thing ever and although he drives me crazy his intentions are always so good! and he still has so much to live for in his life...as do i...but i would put him over myself.
However I am the type of person who...when put in a situation like that would probably put my life in danger to save anothers.

I would die for my husband. If he were in some kind of danger that would be life threatening and it was a matter of him or me, I would die without hesitation. I love him that much.

i think that you're right, people do use the phrase loosely without really thinking about it. but i also think that in some cases it's true. it's only when something very serious or life and death happens that you realise how much you love the people that you're close to.
if it were a situation where i was risking my life for anyone in my close family, my mum, dad or brothers, i would do it without thinking because it's an instinct to protect them.
but then my boyfriend...hmm, well obviously i like him a great deal, but it wouldnt be such an instinctive reaction because as humans on one level we are always looking out for our own survival...

Yes,I would give my life for my wife, children, brothers, sisters, and any other American if threatened with death. I have faced death in the service of my country and can tell you that there is nothing to fear in death. I have seen many people die of various causes and can tell you a coward dies many times but the valiant taste of death but once.

The only person that I would lay down my life for is my daughter. She is part of me and I couldn't live with myself knowing that I didn't do everything in my powers to save her life; including giving up mine. I love her uncinditionally and nothing will ever change that.

An unqualified YES.
I spent 21 years in the Navy, prepared to do that every single day for the nameless, faceless mass of humanity. I was prepared then, and I am still prepared now.
