They inject the ink in the fish to make it say that stuff, which not only is cruel but it also shortens the life of that fish. Even if you were a person that doesn't care about a life it's just a waste of money since it will die soon after you get it anyway.

Ordering a fish with a personalized "tattoo" on it is extremely ignorant and selfish of you. Why on earth would you knowingly cause an animal pain like that?

These tattoos are done by underpaid workers in Southeast Asia in extremely unsanitary conditions. It is estimated that for every one fish that survives the dye injection process, seven to nine more fish had to die. Most fish are not strong enough live through the process and just die while they are getting the "tattoo" that you ordered.

Additionally, with the fish that do survive, the suffering does not end after they get their injections done. Because of the terrible conditions in which the process is done, many of the surviving fish will get Lymphocystis or other infectious diseases from shared needles. Lymphocystis, while usually not fatal, is a virus that causes the fish to grow massive, cauliflower-like lumps at the injection site. Is that really something you want swimming around in your tank?

And that's still not the end of it... The fishes body recognizes the dye used as a foreign and harmful substance (the dye is, by the way, toxic), and works to remove it from the body. Most of the ink is naturally removed by the fish within about six months, and after year there is generally little to suggest the dye was ever there (that is, except for the scarring the fish has on its sides). So then you are left with a fish with no tattoo and a significantly reduced lifespan.

Stay away from dyed fish, and do not shop at stores that sell them. The UK, with the help of Practical Fishkeeping Magazine, launched a campaign against the horrific process of dying fish. Now, nearly all fish stores there have signed a pledge that they will not sell dyed fish. That shows that if people in the US become educated about this abuse, then we can abolish it too. I personally will not shop at stores that sell dyed fish, and same with lots of other aquarists I know. And as someone who takes the hobby very seriously (I have seven fish tanks and six snakes), I can say without a doubt that these pet stores are potentially losing out on a lot of money by not having my business.

Here is an informative website on the subject of dying fish:

You may also want to research the Practical Fishkeeping anti-dying campaign. I hope you will make the ethical, intelligent decision in this matter and avoid dyed fish.

Not to my knowledge. It's not a good business model. Very cruel to fish. The process tends to kill a large percentage of the fish. So combined with the mortality of fish be shipped any way. And the poor health of dyed and painted fish. It wouldn't make a good customer experience.

It would have to be injected with dye. Dont buy died fish. Most fish dont survive the proccess and the ones that do dont live as long as they should. Please check out this website. http://www.deathbydyeing.org
