You have to find a way to boil it without losing the water. Now boiling shouldn't be too hard (just start a fire with the two twigs or smashing rocks together or something like that). When the water boils it evaporates but the salt and sediment in it does not, so the water separates out. Unfortunately that leaves you with the salt and not the water. If you can find a way to catch that water until it can recondense back to water (this time it will be freshwater and not saltwater) then you have it made.
On a stranded island I would look for large leaves and a second container of some kind. You hold the large leaf (I'm talking palm frond size or something like that) over the boiling water and it will collect under the leaf. The coolness of the leaf should help with condensing anyway. But after holding it over the boiling water for a short while (maybe 30 seconds or so?), hold it over the empty container and water should begin to drip off and into the container. The water should be very clean, but this process will take a while (since you are getting it in drops). but this is the fastest way I can think of to get water.

You have to purify the water (meaning get the salt out of there). They way to do that is to get some sea water and then boil it, collect the vapors and then let them cool down again. The reason it works is that when the water boils, the salt won't "boil" with it so the salt and the water will be seperated.
If you were doing this in a lab, then boiling it at exactly 100 degrees celsius will ensure you pure water because I don't think there is anything else in the water that will boil along with the water at that temperature. All of the biological matter (or most of it, like bacteria) should die.

If I remember correctly....if you have a clear piece of plastic & put it over water (a pot or hole) then put a stick in the center (think of a teepee). When the sun hits the water it will begin to evaporate the ocean water and collect as dew on the plastic, then it will run down the side of the plastic, but hope you have something to collect the dripping water in.
FYI: only fresh water will evaporate, the salt gets left behind.
Purifying salt water is expensive thats why there is not many plants that do it...if you can find a cheap method to does this...I am sure you will solve the world's fresh water problem and become a multi-billionaire. (same goes for mineral extraction (minerals...ie....gold, silver are dissolved in ocean water, if you can figure out how to extract those minerals cheaply)

when u r stranded in an island and is feeling dehydrated u r not going to see whether the water is pure or not u r going to drink just like that even if it is salty.
ocean water contains large quantities of impurities dead fishes, aquatic plants remains, pollutants from ships, and ammonia ejected out by aquatic organisms. there is no way by which u can purify water without the help of certain equipments.the best method is distillation (fractional distillation better) as only water
evaporates at 100.c .the steam is condensed allowing it to pass through a container that is cooler( pouring sea water on the container reduces temperature and causes water to condense.

If you have a plastic tarp and a metal bucket you are good. Make a tent of the tarp over a fire with the bucket of seawater in or just over the fire. as the water boils it will evaporate and then condense on the tarp, making it drinkable. If you shape you tent just right all the water will run off at one point into your drinking water vessel

Ocean water has salt in it, and salt dehydrates you. it rather is why they use salt for maintaining issues, through fact it sucks each and all the liquid out. It does no longer strengthen your survival time, if something it would shrink it.

use your shirt or other type of clothing, spread it out above a container, or something to catch the water, and pour your water out over the cloth and use it as a strainer, repeat a couple times, and you should have filtered out most of the salt
