i would have to say withington/didsbury. If you're a student then withington because it is very studenty and a lot of accomodation. If you need somewhere "cheap" then also withington because it's a nice(ish) area and it's got a lot of accomodation which by my logic means they will make it cheaper to get them filled up. I'm probably wrong as this is manchester.
If you have enough money then didsbury is quite expensive but is a very nice area and nice communities and nicer scenery with most of what you might need in didsbury village and 3 really nice parks (fog lane, didsbury and fletcher moss - which has no swings or play area but is the nicest). Didsbury is probably the nicest part of manchester i've been to and i live on the edge of it and no problems.

Depends really on how much you want to pay. The city centre has become really nice in the last few years. You can get quite a nice apartment for 150K. Avoid north Manchester if you are not keen on rough. I used to live in Altrincham anywhere in that area is nice. Basically Trafford borough is nice and the council tax is cheap. Ignore what people say about Manchester. Years ago friends were students there and when I visited I hated it. Later on my partner's job moved him there and I was pleasantly surprised. It is not the same place as in the 90s. It's better than London for shopping.

Depends on how much money you have to spend, I started off about 5 miles South from the centre and have gradually over the years moved further out (now living in Bramhall which I would definately say is a nice place to live).
Cheadle Hulme is also pretty good from my experience and there is a train station there if you need to get to the city centre. Give me a shout if you have an area in mind and need some advice.
Good Luck

Fallowfield or Newton Heath. Plus there's a regular Farmers Market in Cheetham Hill and a lovely village green.
