Yes, it is extremely disturbing to know that you've been passed over by someone you consider to be less qualified, especially when you are doing an important job. It's even more upsetting when this person is "lording" it over you, by your having to ask his permission for everything.

I can't explain why you haven't been given the top assignment. There could be many reasons ranging from length of tenure to your boss thinking you're better suited for the job you're presently doing. Or it could be a personality conflict. I'm really not qualified to give you a reason. But what I can do is tell you to hang in there and continue to do the best job you can. You've already demonstrated your ability to handle an important assignment, so when this one is finished, perhaps you will go on to bigger and better things. In the meantime, don't let your successor bother you. If you have to take orders from him, do so with a smile. It will stop him in his tracks, knowing that he can't upset you. Sometimes it's necessary to swallow our pride in order to succeed. Millions have had to do it. Be patient and be positive in your attitude. You sound like a sterling-quality worker. Good luck to you, my friend.

Start looking for a new job now. If you find one, totally screw over the project, then tell them let the butthead fix it.
