My question is WHY you would even attempt this repair on your own, if you are not as experienced as you think you are? A repair to any vehicle, that involves timing the engine SHOULD be left to a professional, especially on today's vehicles which are so super efficient, and consequently INTERFERENCE engines (meaning valves WILL contact pistons, resulting in damage, if it goes out of time). You should have marked BOTH the cam and crank spockets, and the belt yourself PRIOR to disassembling. At least that way, if there is no mark that is easily visible on the engine, you could reference your own marks. I hope you haven't damaged your engine.

there should be a mechanics book on the make and model and it will tell you the timing for it.
You could always take it into a shop to get it timed right.
I had the cam shaft bolt come out of my Honda not too long ago and that was an expensive trip to the shop!

There should be ATDC lines on the cam and crank gears make both marks point up and the engine is timed.

If it was running OK before you changed it... Most likely you got it at least 1 tooth off.. it happens often.. also if you have a tensioner be sure it is working properly, if not it can cause it to be slightly off time
