Salt increases the boiling point. Besides adding flavor, your food will cook faster if the water is hotter.

Anything that dissolves in water will increase the boiling point. The solute molecules take up spots on the surface, which lowers the internal vapor pressure of the water (fewer water molecules can escape because the surface is jammed with salt molecules). The water can't boil until the internal pressure matches the external pressure, so you get an elevated boiling point.

agreed...increases not decreases the boiling point. Make water boil at a higher temperature. Food cooks faster and more throughly. This is espically need for foods like corn on the cob. By the way...you can do the same thing with sugar!!

people have always said that by putting salt in water it will make it boil faster and in return you food while get done quicker. however, this is not true. water boils at the same rate no matter what is present in the water. by putting salt in you change the chemical complexity of the water and in turn the water boils at a higher temp. so it doesn't boil faster, it boils hotter. and your food gets done faster.
