It's totally unnecessary, but probably not harmful. However I would definitely stay away from any underwire or stiff bras during sleep. They can get all twisted around, and you don't want to wake up with your whole boob being squished beneath your underwire. If you want to wear a bra at night, find a soft, thin comfortable sports bra :-) Good luck!

Some people think that it is good to wear one because they think it will stop their breasts from sagging earlier in life if they wear a bra constantly, even during the night. However, the only thing that can stop sagging breasts is tightening the pectoral muscles of the chest. Breast tissue is adipose tissue (fat) and there is nothing that can firm up fat tissue. Unfortunately, EVERY woman's breasts will sag over time and there really is nothing that can change this naturally. Wearing a bra during the day is essential if you want to give the appearance of having firmer or perkier breasts or to be more comfortable by holding them in place. Wearing one at night, although it may seem helpful, really is not necessary. If you're more comfortable without one, go ahead and take it off when you sleep.

How would I know? I'm a late-middle-aged male. However, common sense says that if you're small or medium, it's probably more comfortable to sleep without. If you're big, I'd guess you'd want the support. Do any women agree with this off-the-wall answer? Just curious

I would say take it off at night if you keep it on all day. Womens breasts need time to breath and be free, being in a bra doesnt allow this. The tissues inside need to be able to move around freely and not get clogged up. Clogging up of tissues in the breast can lead to lumps, which can further lead to other health issues if left alone.

Regular massage of the breasts in circular motions is also good for them, you can do this yourself or get your partner to do it.

If you didn't burn yours in the 'Sixties, you might want to put it away now. "Bras cause breast cancer. It's open and shut," says medical researcher Syd Singer.

Women who wore their bras 24 hours per day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer (in their study, n=2056 for the cancer group and n=2674 for the standard group).

Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk.

Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours per day had a 1 out of 152 risk.

Women who wore bras rarely or never had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer.
The overall difference between 24 hour wearing and not at all was a 125-fold difference.

Its not bad for you. A sports bra is best for comfortablity, and wearing one for your whole life will help prevent sagging when you age.

It's neither good nor bad, but it might be a little uncomfortable, and you don't need support when lying down.
