Most anitvirus programs run in the background. Look for the icon in the lower right of your screen in the task bar.
Which anivirus?
I recommend Windows Defender and AVG.
Antivirus programs have four basic functions.
1.) Scanning the hard drive for virus and adware
2.) Realtime scanning web activity, ingoing and outgoing.
3.) Updating the latest virus information
4.) Updating the programs.

Look for your antivirus in the Start menu, if its there open it and check its running. If its not then you can try uninstalling and re-installing it.
You should only install one anti virus so don't install another with one already on your pc.
