A friend of mine from Asia came here to work as a work permit holder. He asked me if he can, and should, register to vote in local elections here. Does it matter whether or not his name is put in the local electoral registration office?

Anyone who is paying council tax can vote. All they need do is ask at the town hall and get on the electoral roll. Usually a person gets a letter from them but probably this only happens once they are on the electoral roll.

My own view on voting is that if a person pays tax then they can vote no matter what race religion or colour. Go for it!!

Yes. According to English law, people from common law countries can register themselves in electoral register and then they are eligible for voting. He can and should put himself in electoral register by applying to the local electoral office.

My Mum is a Canadian national but as a resident can vote in all elections. I guess as she declares herself on the electoral role. If your not on the electoral role not even a british national can vote. So did your friend fill it in?

No, your friend is not entitled to vote in any British or European election. However, if he is here for any length of time he may wish to register with the Embassy or Consulate of his home country to allow him to vote in elections in that country that may take place while he is in the UK, as most countries allow their citizens living or working abroad to vote.

EU citizens can take part in local elections, but not general or EU ones.

Only British citizens can take part in EU and general elections.

Non EU citizens are not allowed to vote.
