People generally don't pay much attention to "free" websites, or at least, they don't take them very seriously. When I do a search, for example, when going through the list of hits, I never bother clicking on any website that has geocities, angelfire, myspace (dear God, no), tripod, etc in the title. Number one, they're usually run by kids. Number two, they're loaded with annoying banner ads and popups.
If you really have something to say, something worthwhile, then get a real website. They're not too expensive, and if you want people to take you seriously, it's the only way to go.
Just my opinion, of course.

If you are using broadband, then you can run a website on your own computer. Just install Apache (or other web server) on your computer. You will need a domain name. It is easier if you have a fixed IP address but if you have a dynamic IP address can use DynDNS.
