should a child born in the US to illegal immigrants be given citizenship? i strongly disagree with the current policy. pregnant mexicans, and who know what else, are running across the border before their 9 months is up so that they can pop it out and get citizenship for their entire family of 53. if i ever have a kid, ill have it born in mexico so that the mexican govt can worry about it. then ill have it run across the border to become an illegal so that he can have more rights than Americans by getting stuff for free.

pip, your existence is useless. you took everything i said literally. besides, if you think my kid would still be an american after having been born in mexico, thats another reason to modify our policies.

After President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation there were those who said that the ex-slave may not be slaves any longer, but they were also not citizens. Since the US stopped the importation of slaves in 1806, 99% of the slaves were born in America. To combat those who would deny the ex-slaves citizenship the 14th Amendment to the Constitution was passed. The 14th Amendment says that all persons born (or naturalized) in the United States are subject to the jurisdiction thereof. They were made citizens to protect them.

I know it seems weird to apply this standards to children of illegals, but until we change the Constitution, your argument is a mute point.

I agree with you that we have a problem. We have a problem with Mexico who encourages their citizens to come to the US and we have a problem with greedy businessmen who hire illegals below the minimum wage with no benefits. Illegals are wrong to be here, but I hope you'll agree that its not all their fault. There are many in America who profit by them being here.

I know that Mexicans are not the only people who do this, I am from Taiwan and and some women from my country will get on the plane just before they are due and give birth in the U.S. so their babies can be American citizens.(though not nearly as many as the number of Mexicans) This phenomenon is not a cut and dry one. you have so many people of great education and professional trainings following the laws every step of the way to become a citizen of this country and then you have people from countries like Mexico that are horribly bankrupt and corrupt by the politicians(YES, VICENTE FOX I MEAN YOU!!!!I), they are so tragically ignorant and unskilled and they believe the only chance their next generations have is across the border.
I don't think laws will be able to stop people from doing it.

the entire family doesn't get citizenship, do they??? I didn't think that was true. hmmm

It's not the baby's fault though where they are born. As for the family, yeah it's wrong. But who cares? Is it really screwing us up all that bad? Hasn't bothered me yet, not once. I live in an area that SEEMS to be highly populated by illegal immigrants, and I work in a place where I KNOW there are alot of illegal immigrants. But I've not had any problems that are indicative of them being here illegally.

lol, illegal immigrants don't have it better than legal ones.. silly. and your child would still be an American citizen because you are (I'm assuming) also the child being born here doesn't give a family of 53 citizenship lol and on top of that, you don't see many 9 month pregnant mothers running threw a desert.. you don't see many 9 month pregnant mothers running period. silly boy lol. actually, your entire argument is ridiculous lol but it is true and isn't a topic of major debate (well maybe in your small mind but that's about it) the real issue isn't about people being born here.. you change that law and make it retro active and a whole lot of people are moving out of the country.. even if you don't make it retro active it still falls against American values (notice, i didn't say democrat or republican) the real issue is about weather or not we should load them up and ship them out, block them from coming in, or reform our rules and make the system we have work better.

(p.s. my brother in law is from another country.. they have 3 children and have been married for 7 years and just recently was given full citizenship.. they don't just "get it" the family still has to earn it.. they are just permitted to work for it)

Edit: i don't "think" it lol, it's a fact. a child born to an American citizen is an American citizen no matter where they are born.. you obviously didn't do your homework :).

I think that when an illegal alien women have a child in the USA so she could stay in the USA, is in moral, illegal and bad for our society. We want foreigners to come to the USA and leave behind their country of origin and only be faithful to the USA. All of this illegals women have their babies in the USA to exploit our system, not to be part of the system. WE Americans have to be very careful about these illegals. They all should go back to their country with the children. And no American citizen to anchor babies, not like that. They are using these children and we shouldn't let them..

You are talkng about "Anchor Babies". Not automatic. Consider the babies born to tourists or diplomats - they are NOT U.S. citizens in any way, shape, or form. Why should the child of an illegal get consideration over and above that of someone here legally??

I've ans. this before...I live in calif with a house full of chinese people. They go to the welfare office and get benefits...then take their older parents to the social security office to apply for benefits.(anyone can apply for SSi benefits). They have never worked here and have paid no taxes so why do we gave them money?
The other day when i went to city hall I noticed a flyer written in chinese with a list of places to go for welfare..medical etc. I guess it's easy for them since they can't speak english and many don't have job skills.

My great great great grandfather immigrated from Ireland. My great great great grandmother immigrated from Ireland. Neither of them were ever granted their citizenship, merely granted entry.

They worked hard on their farm, become productive members of the town helping raise money to build the courthouses, churches and schools of the town. There are towns in the midwest named after them because of all that they gave to the community.

Their children were born on US soil. They were born US citizens and were the pride of my immigrant ancestors. Those children grew up and married other children of immigrants.

I ask, are you of Native American descent? If not, you're story is probably very similiar to mine and so many other great Americans.

I don't agree with it because you're right, some people do run to America when they're pregnant so their kid can be a citizen. I think they all should be thrown out.
