I went to the emergency room a few nights ago b/c my side was hurting really bad, they came back and told me that I was pregnant. They ordered an ultra sound to make sure the baby wasn't in my tubes. They came back and determined I was 5 weeks. I couldn't see a baby on the monitor. It just looked like a black square. In this baby book I'm reading it says you can hear a heart beat at 5 weeks! Is there something wrong with my baby?? HELP!

do you know how small that little zygote is at 5 weeks??
It may well be there, but unless you have a stethescope, yu may not be able to until the little bug is bigger. Since I *know* you are following up with your OB/GYN visits, ask next time you are at one to hear. They will let you.

The baby doesn't even resemble a baby at this point and you can't hear the heartbeat for sometime. Around 7 weeks you should be able to see the heartbeat on an u/s. Sounds like you're right on scedule. I had an u/s at 7 weeks and it was pretty much a blob with a flashing little heartbeat. I'm 11 weeks now and that heartbeat has arms and legs. You're fine and take care of yourself and that little one. Good luck!

I actually had the same experience. I found out I was pregnant (only instead of finding out at the ER that I was pg - I found out because I had pg test laying around that was going to exp soon - needless to say, I just went off the pill and almost passed out when I saw two lines). However, I was also experiencing bad pains in my side and abdomen that were causing me double over. My doctor sent to me to the hospital to confirm that the pg was not tubal as well and the ultrasound revealed that I was 5 wks along.

When you make your appt w/an OB they'll probably schedule it for when you're around 10 wks and most of them will do an ultrasound during that first visit and they'll show you the heart beat. I think we were able to hear it at our second visit.

As hard as is it, just try to stay calm and relax. If you have any doubts (you start cramping, spotting/bleeding, etc.) - call your doctor.

Generally it is very difficult to hear the heart beat so early...if they had a super mod, extra fancy ultrasound machine, they could see the heart beating (looks like an equal sign rythmically contracting) and possible hear it too.
When you go see your OB or midwife, they will use a fetal heart monitor (doppler) and you'll hear the heart beat...generally around 12 weeks it's easy to get, but if the Doc knows what he's doing it he could get it around 8 weeks.
No worries...it's early and it DOES look kind of like an already chewed piece of gum!! You will see in about 12 - 15 weeks an AMAZING utlrasound of your little one.
Congrats!

The earliest I've ever seen my baby's heartbeat on an ultrasound was 6 weeks and even then it's really hard to see. Don't panic, all you're supposed to see is a black spot and a yolk sac that feeds the baby. Odds are you're fine so try to relax :)

The heartbeat is at 6 weeks. The baby is so small at 5 weeks, all you will see on an u/s is a black blob. Check out:

No the baby should be fine. I couldn't hear the heart beat of my baby until like 13 weeks. It depends on the postion of the baby.
Congrats!

If the doctor thought there were any complications they would have told you then. I'm sure everything is fine. It's hard to see ANYTHING that early. If they thought the baby miscarried, they would have addressed it then and if it was confirmed, performed a DNC. Just get to your OB for prenatal care asap. It's best for the baby and it will ease your mind too!

Congratulations!

Your book is incorrect. Most doctors will tell you that it is difficult to find a heartbeat until 10 weeks.
