where do they get the money for the prizes?

The producers make the show and create a budget for the prizes. The manufactures or dealers are invited to donate prizes or sell at cost with their name mentioned on air. When the show is cast and ready, then the producers sell it to a network that then sells commercial air time and uses some of the money to finance the show. You have to remember that with game shows, you see some of the costs in the prizes. But on a sit-com like Friends, the actors were each making a million a week. Game shows are not really that expensive to produce even when the prizes can be one million dollars. Sitcoms and dramas are very expensive. More so than most game shows.
