What is the importance of microorganisms in the field of biotechnology ? How is biotechnolgy being used in this case ?

they are crucial .. in biotechnology we are harnessing the power and ability of microorganisms to mediate chemical reactions. The biggest application that has high public awareness right now is production of alcohol as an alternative fuel ... high volumes of grain or whatever will have to be processed efficiently for this. Yeasts or other alternative fermenters will be used.

Microorganisms are vital to humans and the environment, as they participate in the Earth's element cycles such as the carbon cycle and nitrogen cycle, as well as fulfilling other vital roles in virtually all ecosystems, such as recycling other organisms' dead remains and waste products through decomposition. Microbes also have an important place in most higher-order multicellular organisms as symbionts. Many blame the failure of Biosphere 2 on an improper balance of microbes.
