they are crucial .. in biotechnology we are harnessing the power and ability of microorganisms to mediate chemical reactions. The biggest application that has high public awareness right now is production of alcohol as an alternative fuel ... high volumes of grain or whatever will have to be processed efficiently for this. Yeasts or other alternative fermenters will be used.

Microbes also have an important place in most higher-order multicellular organisms as symbionts. Many blame the failure of Biosphere 2 on an improper balance of microbes.
