I have noticed that some serial killers weren't dumb or stupid, but instead they appeared to be extremely smart.

Intelligence can only be a bad thing when it is used for malicious intent, hence some of the most well known serial killers like Ted Bundy and the BTK Killer were highly intelligent.

In the case of serial killers, you're talking about people who are extremely smart but lack empathy. It is possible to be as intelligent, or morseso, as the killers in question but still be able to feel empathy for other human beings.

That said, I do believe it's true that ignorance is bliss. The more intelligent you are, and the more education you get, the more you question and analyse the world around you and you're more likely to become cynical, bitter, and depressed, which is a real detrimental factor of intelligence. You can become unable to just enjoy things for their own sake, without seeing all the things that are wrong. But on the plus side, intelligence and education also allows you to appreciate things in the world that you might not otherwise, and of course it's the exceptionally smart people who allow the world to survive. So maybe you can be too smart, but there's always a silver lining.

Smart and moral are two totally different things!
And there is some small amount of very young research that suggests that serial killers' brains don not work quite the same way a regular person's do, with all the centers lighting up on the scans the same way at the same times.
But, if we tried to scan everyone to figure out who it's likely to be, we'd have a version of that movie with Tom Cruise about locking people up for future crimes.
Anyway,
"smart" has nothing to do with motivation.

Most criminals are stupid, that is why they are criminals. In the few cases they are actually smart, they can really do a lot of damage and go from once and then caught killers to serial, ie they didn't get caught quickly and were able to do it multiple times. That is what makes them interesting in a strange way, is that they are smart but also killers. Luckily they are few and far between.

Autism is a form of genius. I know of highly intelligent people who can solve incredible problems, but are unable to tie their own shoes. Some are capable of extremely complex thought process, but the simplest things are perhaps to simplistic and evade them. Too smart, I don't think so. Just a matter of priority. In the case of serial killers, it's a perverted form of intelligence. They are not stupid men. But they are far from normal.

I'm way smarter than people my age, but I'm no serial killer!!!

These sorts of people are often extremely smart, though.
Sometime the borderline between sanity and insanity is really thin...and being very smart could drive you nuts!

IQ is not measured by their action or papers. it is measured on how one handles thing. Yes, those killers may be smart in planning on killing. No doubt about it
