•If all immigrants were standardized on entry to our ‘PROUDLY’ multicultural country what a monotonous society we would live in; effectively sapping immigration of one of its chief assets: diversity leading to knowledge and understanding. Indeed it is plausible to argue that degradation and life standard of women in the western world is considerably more worrying than that of our Muslim counterparts. Such dishonours as prostitution, domestic violence and rape are all substantially more prevalent in the West. Individuals say the veil makes them feel threatened; however when examples of the veil being forcibly removed from women in the streets with glaring obscenities being screamed are brought to light, this suggestion seems inverted. This symbol of reserved piety and protection from debauchery in its voluntary and minimal existence on ‘our’ streets should be respected and appreciated.

Actually rape and domestic violence, as defined by more western laws, are more common in the middle east. However, they are often not recognised as such.

But agree that westerner's issue with the veil seems to me to be a little idiotic.

Where are you people getting your information? Read to days yahoo.com news. Women in Iraq and Afghanistan are being beaten in the streets, rape and tortured to death. Men are not prosecuted for these horrible crimes. The soldiers over there do write home. We do get information out of there. They say those women are beaten, abused, sold and used as virtual slaves to men. I am so sick of these muslim women coming on here and justifying wearing a veil saying they are treated better in Iraq than we are here. Wear the dam veil if you want but stop putting down our culture or get out of our country. They may work for you in France and England where they are afraid of you but in the USA that doesn't work. Women are not victums in the USA
We have loving husbands the majority of us and we love them.
You don't need prostitutes because in Iraq the soldiers say they rape what they want. So stop the putting down of our society to justifly yours. I am getting sick of it because it isn't true.
You like it so well over there then get to hell out of our country.
They like it so much send them all back to Iraq.

Interesting.
But, no-one is asking for standardisation of immigrants that enter this country. All we, I, are asking is that they respect our ways and customs and the way that we conduct ourselves within this British country. They came to settle in Britain, therefore, they are the ones that have to adapt to the country in which they have chosen to settle.
It is, also, very apparent to me that multi-culturalism does not work. It breeds differences, which result in suspicion, which results in racism.
It is known that the veil is a symbol of subjugation, women are equal in this country.
It was also noticeable that in the photograph of the muslim lady at the center of the latest hoo-hah, her husband who was with her, was clad in traditional western, modern dress!
Smacks of double standards to me!

I think we are placing too much emphasis on the veil. Most Muslim women in UK do not wear it,and if they do we should allow them to do so.
