Honestly. What are the benefits? I'm not interested in religous reasons.

Marriage makes life easier for the couple.

• Financially - you get tax breaks; you save on car insurance, gym membership and other misc. bills and expenses. It's easier to handle investments/wills/inheritances etc; the laws are spouse-friendly, not partner-friendly.

• Socially - people take your relationship more "seriously", and you don't have to put up with everyone asking "why aren't you two married?" for the rest of your life. Also, it's easier on the kids, since they will be asked this same question about their parents over and over.

• Emotionally - marriage can bring/solidify the feeling of security and "specialness" of the relationship.

These are some of the benefits I can think of at the moment.

P.S. A lot of the "benefits" that people are listing - love, companionship, committment, friendship, growing old together - are applicable to any long-term relationship, not just to marriage. I tried to come up with a list of benefits unique to marriage specifically, not just to a committed long-term relationship.

What are the benefits of not being married? It is a personal choice that people make. I am happily married and have no complaints. I did not do it for religous reasons. I did it because I love my wife and wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.

Been married 12 years.
When you find the answer let me know.

Money- Tax breaks yes, but she spends your money

Special bond- no couples cheat on each other married people have affairs

You get half of your spouses assets, but woman statistically make less than men so that's a reason for a woman to get married not a man.

Married Men live longer- but are they happier???

Family- child can be born out of marriage.

Accidents- its a lot easy to see your wife in the hospital and make decisions about her treatment if she was in a coma. Without the marriage the hospital would have to ask the parents.

THAT'S IT!!! The benefit of marriage to to get around hospitals red tape in case something should happen to someone else.

Except for religion reasons, there are really no reasons. I mean, if just living together is acceptable for you, I cant think about a reason to get married.
Anyway it looks like some people just cant resist society pressure for a 'cerimony', mainly if they are having or are planning on having kids. It is like an obligation you have to pay to society, so that society returns your the favor by considering you another 'normal' brick on the wall.

It's much better for the children if you have them together. It also shows a level of commitment not shown by just living together. It may also provide some level of financial security for a surviving spouse in the event of death of the other. There may be other practical reasons too such as insurance benefits.

Because you love someone so much you want to tell the entire world you are husband and wife, and that means more than living together to society in general for various reasons.

Good philosophy. I wish I had thought about it more before I got married at 18. Way too young to know anything about what I wanted in life.

Because this is the person that you want to wake up to for the rest of your life. Because this is the person who you want to grow old with. Because you cant imagine your life without this person in it. Because you are truly and whole heartly in love with this person. This person is your best friend. Because this is the first person you run to to tell them some good or bad news because you value what they have to say. Because this person would do anything humanly possible to make you happy and you would do the same for them.
