Generally speaking, the FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) does not restrict employers from requiring overtime.
Barring an enforceable employment contract or collective bargaining agreement (which state otherwise), the boss could tell a worker at the end of his shift that he has to stay and that would be perfectly legal. There are a few industry specific exceptions (i.e. truck drivers and airline pilots).

As long as you didn't sign a contract stating you would only work a certain number of hours, then yes, I believe it is legal.
They just HAVE to pay you overtime.

i don't think that overtime can be forced, but, you gotta figure if you don't do it then their opinion of you will be lowered; you won't be considered a "team player" and it might affect your standing in the long, or short, run. not fair, but probably will happen that way. as far as the hours and the times you have to do it, yeah, they can mandate that.
