I am a toy collector (Star wars, LOTR, 1980's figures etc) and I was wondering if the market will ever grind to a halt. There are only a certain amount of these items produced, many get played with / destroyed, as toys do, but a large amount end up in collections, with the collectors never willing to sell them.

What do you think?

Yep. Eventually. EBay is great for collectors in the sense that toys that were hard to find are now a little easier to come across, but if you're selling, it makes it tougher. Look at MEGO toys, you can get them dirt cheap compared to what they were pulling in about 5 years ago.

I think the 1980's stuff will peak in value when those that played with them hit their mid forties. After that point the toys that the next generation played with will replace them in value.

The only 1980's toys that will hold their value will be the high quality pieces which display craftsmanship that can be appreciated for years to come regardless of wether or not the buyer has nostalgic attachment to the item.

I hope that it will because my son- in -law. has Star Wars toys up the you know what! I know that here in the east old tin toys can
command excellent prices.I don't know too much about the
antique business but I think that as long as there is interest in
Star Wars there will be a market for them.

As long as people continue to hoard these kind of things, the higher the value of them will climb. These kind of collectibles are a very narrow niche but, I don't see it vanishing. You aren't talking about Beanie Babies or Cabbage Patch Dolls. I think the items you're referring to have passed the test of time. "Flash-in-the-pan" type novelties never last more than about a year.

I don't think it will ever dry up. As long as there are people that long to be young again the market for toys from their youth will be around.

There is always someone out there who wants to reconnect with a piece of their childhood, new or used. I think there will always be someone interested in buying. That is not to say that the prices won't fluxuate or decrease.
