Is it right for players to earn thousands of pounds every week for playing two matches a week at the most?

Are they really worth that much?
Especially when clubs put up the prices of tickets to pay these astronomical wages?

This is what happens when the business side of the game surpasses the game and the sport itself. Here in Australia with Rugby League etc, clubs have salary caps that all player wages must fit under. There are problems with that also, but they are paid nowhere near the salaries of footballers. It certainly would be interesting to see how they would go if their wages were performance based. The above answerer is correct, supply and demand. Whilst ever we keep up the supply they will keep on demanding.

There should definitely be a cap. These are sports where, at any minute, someone can get permanently out of action. Yeah, you can get another player, but the challenge to pay that player close to the amount that the previoius player or greater is always in the air. I wouldn't play sports for "chicken feed", but if the money is worth more to the player than the talent they displayed to be chosen, that must continually be displayed to stay with the team and the sport, we don't need 'em.

Man the problem is not about putting a cap on players wages, its just that now adays theres just too much money in football so that the clubs can buy any player they want for as high an amount they can. If theres no stopping the amount of money in football, im afraid the players wages cant be capped.

Supply and demand. These teams and the players on them attract many fans and sell many products and advertising because of this attraction. Though the salaries seem astronomical comapared, to say, our salaries...they are earning what the market deems is correct (there is always room for negotiation though)...

thats exactly why sports leagues need salary caps. Not only does it keep ticket prices down but it forces teams to be competative by not allowing one team to buy up all the talent.

If people quit buying tickets, teams will quit paying players so much.

Do a search on "Tampa Bay Devil Rays," "attendance," and "team payroll" in Google.

No. People should refuse to pay prices and the salaries would drop.
