Try looking at Pulitzer prize or other award nominees, this will give ideas on well written new books.
The best thing to go on is personal recommendations, friends colleagues, even have a sneaky look what people are reading on the bus/train. Don't dismiss a book immediately, be open to different genre's.
Try reading an extract on line before you buy it, to give you a feel for the book. Personally I tend to pick up books whose front covers appeal to me, these give you a general idea of the book subject matter then read the back and see if it's for you.

NY Times Book review is a good place to start.
Additionally, many books are marked with seals or notations on their dust jackets when they have won awards.
I consistently look for books that have won either the Booker or Pulitzer awards.
Lastly, check with your local librarian. They are incredible sources of information. Tell them the books you have read and enjoyed and they will find similar books or authors for you to explore

The library is great because you can take a bunch of books home and try them out. I can usually tell within a few pages if I am going to like the author's style or not. Since I have nothing invested in the book other than a couple of pages, I can easily move on if I don't like it. Also, our library will often print handouts or bookmarks that say "If you like so-and-so, then you would probably enjoy ...."

I would think about what genre you are interested in and if you have any favourite authors. Then normally on amazon it will show you those people who have looked at books like the ones you have read and enjoyed therefore probably the same genre and you will enjoy. There is also the local bookstore and library as they will probably know the kind of thing you want and point you in the right direction.

Look up books that you like on amazon and see what other people who read it are reading/buying. Also speak to your librarian because these people live for books and they love to have people ask them, a lot of libraries will have specialists for different subjects so they can advise in a gentre that you like.
