If you view the godfish from above - tail towards you will see that the female fish is fatter on the left hand side of it's body while the male is quite slim.
Also when a male goldfish is in breeding condition it developes white spots around the gill plates.
It is best to select about 6 good specimens (obviously containing both sexes!) if you wish to breed Goldfish - to trigger spawning in the spring or summer then a supply of fresh water can stimulate them although any addition of new water must be done with care.

The females are larger than the males. Also, when the females reach the spawning age, they will thicken in the ventral area due to the eggs gathering.

There are little white spots on the side by/on the gills on the male

Look at their vent, where the poo comes out. If it sticks out a little bit then its a female and if it goes in or is flat then its a male.
