No. The reason for the space race in the 50's and 60's was simply national pride. We had just come out of WWII and found that we had a new mortal enemy - USSR. We had to show that we were better than the Soviets by getting to the moon first. It was a thrown-together thing, for all the engineering marvels that came out of it (and all the spin-offs as well: velcro for one), and it is surprising that we didn't lose more people to these missions than we did.

Three words... Cold War politics. It was a war of ideologicies between the United States and the old Soviet Union that spurred the development of spacecraft and the policies of national pride.

The space race is all about politics. It is for bragging rights. That and the fact that a space rocket is just an intercontinental ballistic missile with a capsule instead of a bomb on top.
