I have been offered a house in Ilminster ave. Whats the area like? i have 2 small children and one doing her GCSEs, so it would have to be a good move to be worth it. I live in London. Have family in Congresbury.

Please help me make up my mind. Thanks

How can I put this delicately ...

If you wanted to give Bristol an enema, Knowle (and especially Knowle West) is where you'd stick the tube.

The tomcats go around in pairs, each with one eye closed.

I use to live on connaught road, which is just off Ilminster Avenue. Ilminster Avenue is actually in the infamous Knowle-West area of Bristol.
It is fair to say that the area struggles disproportionatley with crime a drugs, however there are many initiatives to tackle this.
KWADS - Knowle West Against Drugs has done much to improve the area. Local funding allows them to patrol the area and deal with any anti-social behavoiur. They also do many tasks which would otherwise have to wait for council specialists, such as picking up seringes or clearing graffiti.
Stamp-duty has been abolished, which is a Government initiative to encourage people to buy their council houses. Again, this is resulting in much more pride in the area.
Durring the majority of my two year stay I encounter no trouble whatsoever, although in my last two weeks my car had two attempted thefts. However I belive the insidents were related, i.e. the theif learnt from the first attempt so tried again (only to fail - ha!).
The area doesn't have any pubs. The only one was shut due to repeated drug dealing and hasn't re-opened.
Overall due to the money being ploughed in the area it is becoming more prosperus and is a good investment for home buyers (my house price doubled in the two years I was there). It is NOT a leafy suberb, but has good public transport to town and is around a 45 minute walk to town.
Congresbury is no where near Knowle-West (about a 40 minute drive), but you will struggle to get any closer for the same price range. Weston-Super-Mare is only 5 minutes from Congresbury, but this will be no use if you need to be in, or near, Bristol.

Knowle is one of the worst areas in Bristol, avoid it at all costs.

The schools in that area are frequently vandalised, and they have the WORST exam results in the city (only a very small majority of them get any GCSEs).

Dont do it! Its crap.

Move to Clifton instead, if you want to be in Bristol, but if you're prepared to be ten miles away look into Bath.
