Tornado, F-5, Plainfield, IL, 1991. Was only a few miles away, sky was green, wind was bending the trees so that the top would touch the ground on both sides, sounded like a train was going through the house, the air pressure was almost unbearable. The most frightening experience of my life.

On a day trip from Sorrento to the island of Ischia. A storm developed while we were still in the bay of Naples. We were diverted to Naples where we were ushered on to a sturdier boat. We should have stayed on land. The crew seemed to think we'd be OK and that the storm was practically over, so on we went. Well, the next thing was the waves started to hit the boat, the rain was lashing down, and everyone was told to sit tight, an impossible feat, as we were being thrown around so much. Water was leaking through the windows The trip was horrendous, there were no atheists on the board that day, let me tell you. Loads of people were audibly praying, everyone else was vomiting. I have never, ever felt so afraid, nor have I felt so grateful to see land. I would never want to go there again. We had to come back, once the storm had abated, hours and hours later, on a car ferry to a town on the mainland, a journey, which thankfully was of a very short duration.

Tropical Storm Gaston, Aug. 30, 2004. Richmond, Virginia:
We got over 11 inches of rain in less than 8 hours. I was working the night shift at a local Holiday Inn. No one in the area had any idea it would get so bad. My husband and i slept through it. We woke up to find a lake in our back yard. What was normally a 20 minute drive to get to work took almost 4 hours due to all the flooded streets. It looked like a bomb had hit the city. When i got to work there were about 40 people stranded in our lobby and all of our rooms were rented out. All of our ground level rooms were flooded with about 4 inches of standing water. I believe 7 or 8 people were killed in our area due to the storm.

Lightning doesn't hit the same place twice - but it does relatively?!?
I've been nearly hit twice - although once was about 5 metres to my right and this summer was 3 metres to my left. Once in UK once in Romania - maybe I'm just highly charged and it's attracted to me!
Anyways 1st time - it hit the next door house and travelled through the pipe system to the radiator I was holding (stood on a bean bag) threw me about 2m across the room - aged 8 this was really cool lol
This summer in Romania was decending from a ridge and it struck the ground very close - smelt interesting!
Also was stood in the eye of the storm the night before - it was amazing, felt like we should stay close to the ground but watched it for hours with hot chocolate - will never forget :-)

Snowstorm a few years ago. Was traveling through Erie, PA trying to get home for christmas and a huge snow storm hit, and it was late at night. Apparently after 9 pm PA decides not to clear the interstate. So the snow was coming down like crazy and we were in a little civic and going 15 mph on the interstate trying not to slide off and it was dark so you couldnt see anything. It was awful we had to find a hotel and the only one we could find was some run down joint that smelled funny. It was my nightmare before christmas, but now we just laugh about it.

A Hurricane in Cape Town South Africa. They are rare there and it uprooted just about every tree in the neighborhood. The streets were blocked off by fallen trees at every roadway. One neighbor had a 300 year old tree fall straight through the roof into their bedroom. My Husband was standing in the back garden when he heard a tree crack and groan. He ran pretty fast (very fast I would think) as our precious Apricot tree came crashing down.

I'm going to show my age now. In the UK, the winter of 1962-63 was pretty dire, of course those were the days when we had winters in the UK. During the alleged hurricane in the 1980's, I was in Kent which is where the worst hit, I slept through it!!

Several years ago, I had to go to MO to pick up my son who was visiting his father. It was in December, but I hadn't really heard of too much bad weather. As I got into Ky-it starting freezing rain. No big deal, I thought. I just got behind some of the salt trucks and followed them as long as I could. I got to MO and checked into a hotel. The next morning, there was snow and ice everywhere! I decided to leave and try it anyway. It was awful! No one could drive over 20 mph. I tried to follow the paths of those big rigs-they made cracks in the ice and I tried to drive in those. It was so cold that even my heater and defroster didn't do anything to help-I had them on full blast.
I saw several cars and trucks sliding all over the place and into ditches. I was concentrating on the roads so much that I missed my exit! So, I had to slowly creep along til I found a hotel. Before I got to one-a car that was right beside slid and hit a telephone pole-liter rally bending the car in half! Scared me so bad.
I finally got to a hotel and was shaking because I was so scared. My car was liter rally frozen over! I had to stay there 3 days before the weather let up.
I later found out that it had been one of the worst winter storms they had ever had. I believe it.
Now, when I go there-I leave in Summer..
