It was swollen and painful for a few days. Now its less swollen and less painfull but the redness spread to almost 1 sq feet covering from the upper back of the thigh to the back of the knee.
Should I use hot or cold packs?

Use an ice pack. On for 20 minutes at the most and then off for at least 20 minutes. Skin can "freezer burn" so no more than 20 minutes at a time. Never put heat on swelling, it will cause increased discomfort and swelling.

cold,hot can cause the blood vessels to expand more making matters worse

broken blood vessels, it will help immensley if you rub it and apply heat.
