Tape is wrapped super-tight around the blade counter-clockwise to keep the grains in the wood as tight and as solid as possible to prevent breakage.

The end.

I usually retape my blade after a few games and practices (or if the tape on the blade starts to rip and isn't smooth). I take a piece of tape and put it on the bottom of the blade (the part that touches the ice). I then start the tape on the back heel of the stick, taping the front and back, with each time around overlapping the last about half way. When you get close to the nose of the blade, rip off the tape, and make sure it finishes on the back. I then rub the taped blade with a puck to smooth it out. Some guys wax the blade to make the tape more smooth and to make the tape last a little long. By taping the blade, the gives friction for when the puck comes in contact with the blade, making it easier to handle as it won't hit and slip off.

Tape protects your blade, it hides the puck (why you use black tape), and keeps the puck on your blade (which is why the wax, as well as sticky blade tape).

I change the tape as soon as it shows damage. Nicks from skates, other blades, tears from the the puck or where it's worn through on the edge from the ice. This winds up being every game or so, sometimes more since I tend to be a grinder and that's hard on your stick, blade and tape.

i change the tape every week i also put baby powder on the tape so the snow doesn't stick to the blade. but i usually go through 3 sticks a week. $90.00 composite stick are crap but i love them.so if you add that up i spend probably $300.00 a week on sticks and tape. that's where all my money goes lol.

I put surf wax on my tape. It prevents snow buildup which lessons your control of the puck.

change the tape when its worn.

wax prevents moisture from seaping into the tape. it also helps preserve it.
