My husband is terminally ill, money has been so tight, as I have to stay home with him now. My four children are so worried. Elmo our dog has been with us since his birth, and he's family. I took him to the vet last week, and they said he has a very serious murmor, and enlarged heart. He needs to be seen. I made a couple of calls....the best answer was $1200. for the echo and the reading, visit with the specialist. I am looking for a place in the chicago area or suburbs that would reduce costs or take payment plans....ect. Thank you for your help in advance!

I have had echo's done on several dogs over the years at a University vet clinic, with a visit and reading by a board certified cardiologist, and it is usually around $400. Either you are getting ripped off, or there is more to it. I do not think there are low cost clinics that offer echo. It is pretty specialized and you need the consult with the cardiologist.
Your other option is to have your vet give their best guess as to what it is and treat accordingly. It may not be ideal, but at least the dog can get some treatment.
I also doubt that a Humane Society has an echo, let alone a cardiologist.

There are some good universities in your area. Find one with a veterinary school and see if they would do the test at a discount. Some vet schools need "patients" for their students to practice procedures. These procedures are always overseen by a veterinarian, who many times does the test to demonstrate the technique to the student. Good luck.

the vet school in Illinois at the university should have a fund set up to off set fees for services for low income people, people on diablity social security ect. The funds come from donors. Please call your local Vet teaching school I am crertain that you will get the help you need.If not Ill. vet school then call U.W. Vet school in Madison wi. I know they do offer this,I dont know if they would help a non resident of Wisconsin ?????.Try Ill. first though .If you have to ask Wis.vet school for help give them allthe details of your familys situation.Ask for the financial assistance dept. at both schools. God Bless all of you!
P.S. In Wisconsin vet school. they want you to apply for Care Credit financing first and get denied befor they will help you,I do not know about Ill. vet school if requirement is the same.

Call the Chicago Humane Society. I have just read that they are opening their clinic to the public on a sliding scale.
