The National Football league (NFL) is divided into two conferences of 16 teams each. They stand for American Football Conference and National Football Conference. One team from each conference will play in the Super Bowl.

The names come from the fact that there used to be two separate profession leagues that merged. When the NFL merged the AFL most of the teams in the AFL were placed in a new conference of the NFL called the AFC and most of the teams already in the NFL were placed in the NFC.

National Football Conference and American Football Conference.
When the National Football League and the American Football League merged in 1970 (forming the modern NFL), the two former leagues became "conferences", with a few NFL teams (Colts, Steelers, Browns) moving to the AFC so that the two would be equal in numbers. These days, the playoffs are held within those conferences, with the two conference champions playing in the Super Bowl.
