If you had a dagger and a long sword with the same attack strength, which would be more effective or are they equivalent. Intuitively, the long sword would have a larger effective distance but do you think the game considers this or are they equal? Thanks.

Depends on several factors. Weapon speed, base damage, and how it's being used are all in question.

If you're dealing with an offhand weapon, you want the one with the fastest (lowest) attack speed, if you're a warrior or rogue. For a main-hand weapon, it gets more tricky. Generally, you'll want the one with the higher base damage - any special attacks (which use a fixed speed) will be based off of that. Mostly more useful to a rogue, since a warrior gets more rage from faster attacks.

If you're a hunter - just go with whatever weapon gives better stats.

Melee weapon ranges are all the same, so a sword and a dagger have the same reach.

WoW doesn't have the same physics as regular life so you're better off choosing whichever is better for your class. If your a fury Warrior always use 2 swords or the rogues and locks will make fun of you. If you're a lock there are only 4 good daggers for you, but there are over 10 good swords for you. Only 4 swords are good for mages, I wouldn't use any daggers for your mage. All spell casters including Druids should use staffs, especially Atiesh if you're 1337(elite) enough for Naxx and AQ40. Rogues should have a dagger in their main hand at all times, with either a sword or dagger in the off hand. Don't worry about the speed of a weapon if you're a rogue, only the damage it does because you attack so fast it doesn't matter what the blade's speed is. If you're a fury warrior you can get away with using a dagger, but it's a waste. If you're an arms warrior with any 1H weapon you need to reroll to a rogue, and quick!

You have to think the dagger is usually the quicker weapon because it is smaller and easier to move. The long sword is much larger and would take longer for a swing. But also the long sword should deal out more damage because of it's size and weight. If you want speed go for the dagger. If you want a little more strength go for the long sword.

The thing to look at in Wow is damage and speed.

I would bet that the dagger has a much higher attack speed. Therefore a much higher DPS (Damage per second). Generally Wow doesn't take into account ranges with melee weapons....It sucks I know...But there it is.
