2y
You simplify y + y
8 + 8 = 16 and 2(8) = 16

! apple + 1 apple = 2 apples
1y + 1y = 2y
By convention, in algebra if we have just one of something, we omit the 1 in front of the letter.
Be prepared to use lots of concrete examples to help your son - knives, forks, spoons, CDs etc. Put them on the table and get him to move them around to represent x and y.
The squares of chocolate bars are useful for multiplying. It might be helpful to get another adult to help him too.
You might enjoy Maths classes at an adult education college. I went to an adult college to learn how to use a computer. We had huge fun and laughed all the time. I met some super people there.
The downside is that you're reading this now! If I hadn't gone to adult college to learn how to use a computer, you would be reading this now!

They are trying to get him to see the connection between addition and multiplication. Don't laugh. I volunteered at this 'last chance' school for students that couldn't attend regular schools and many of them never progressed past doing repeated additions rather than multiplication.
I'm a graduate math student. The reason y+y = 2y is because of the distributive law of multiplication over addtion for the field of real numbers.

If you have one apple and someone hands you another apple, then how many apples do you have? You have 2 apples.
The same concept applies to y.
One y plus one y equals two y's.
y + y = 2y

If you don't know that, and your son can't figure it out from having paid attention in class, then you'd better plan on getting him a tutor or getting him out of this class. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm trying to offer honest, constructive advice. I can't imagine a simpler algebra question than that one!

Y+Y = 2Y
Any expression added to itself is 2(that expression) I.e. XYZ +XYZ = 2XYZ
It DOES NOT mean Y2 (Y squared)!
