You don't need to download songs from iTunes to get them on an iPod, but you do need to use the iTunes software to transfer any songs you may have to the iPod.
Any songs you do buy from iTunes are only playable on an iPod, but mp3 files acquired from other sources work just fine.
You will not be able to play .wmv files, because Apple doesn't really want to place nice with Microsoft.

You dont have to use iTunes for your iPod, but the other programs that support iPod lack a lot of options that iTunes has.
If you already have songs, you can put them onto iTunes. iTunes software it free, but you can buy songs of of iTunes. You dont have to buy them from iTunes though.
If you have a CD, just put your CD in the computer, and copy the songs to iTunes. If you have mp3's, just drag them into the iTunes browser.
I would download iTunes, and try it out to see if it has everything you want.

Yes and No.
You need the software that comes with the IPod to communicate and sync your music files on the Ipod but you do not have to purchase all of your music through Itunes.
You can use windows media player (or other media software) to rip music files from cds and upload them into Itunes.
You can also add other mp3 files that you may have created into your itunes library and then add them to your IPod.
hope that helps.

i think you do sine they were designed for macs and macs use quicktime and itunes and quicktime are basically the same mdia format but all the ipods (except the shuffle) must use itunes because they are only compatiable with macs it's an apple product
but the shuffle can store mp3s and i think can work with only mp3s (i think this was something for the many people that ues windows but since people wanted all the cooler ipods and macs were expensive bootcamp was made if you don't know what boot camp is
boot camp is a program designed to trick the windows os into thinking that the os is mac os x)

iPods only sync with iTunes, however, you don't have to rebuy all your music. If you have the music files on your computer already, no matter what format their in, iTunes will find them and add them to your music list. Apple doesn't make you rebuy everything. You can also upload CDs onto iTunes.
