The 1800+ just refers to the rated speed of that processor. AMD Athlon(tm) refers to the entire family of Athlon cpu's which included the 1800+.
It is better to use the socket type when shopping for a cpu and go for the highest speed rating that you can afford for you socket type.
ex socket 939, socket am2, socket 754
The value line of AMD cpu's are called Semprons just like the value line of Intel cpu's are called celerons.

an AMD athlon procesor is a the brand of processor,or if what you mean it is the model before Athlon XP came out. Before AMD Athlon Which are old, were refered by speed up to 1.2 ghz later AMD came out with XP with a bizzare way to measure 1800 means 1.4ghz but in a diffrent way, also with the introduction of Quanti-Speed Artitecture in the AMD ATHLON xp it's a bit faster so and Amd Athlon Xp 1800+ with Quantispeed it is 1.4ghz but it is comparable to a 1.7 ghz processor from intel,AMD Athlon Xp may be slower but its a bit faster from the competition. I have a AMD ATHLON XP 2100+ overclocked from 1.73 to 1.829 with quantispeed it performs like a 2.02 ghz processor from intel so it may beslow on paper but with Quanti Speed it allows to be faster.
What is Quantispeed a direct connection with the memory on die,for fast transfer and distribution of info which attributes to the increase in speed the AMD Athlon XP 1800+ is based on the palomino core my recommendation get an AMD ATHLON XP 3200+ FOR BETTER SPEED
hope this helps:)

AMD has produced 4 types of CPU:
1-AMD Duron(Discontinued):Max speed 1600+ and the FSB speed was 100-133,Cache memory 64-128KB
2-AMD Athlon(Discontinued):Max Speed 1000 Mhz and the FSB Speed was 100-133,Cache memory128-256KB
3-AMD Athlon XP(Recently Discontinued):Max Speed 3000+,FSB Up to 400Mhz,Cache 512KB
4-AMD Sempron(Being Produced):Same as Athlon XP but with more cache and higher bus speed(166) plus 64 bit capabilities(some models)
5-AMD Athlon 64-64FX(Being Produced):The newset 64 bit CPUs with the features of Sempron but reaching more cache(1-2MB)and FSB(800Mhz)
AS ABOUT ATHLON,IT IS A PREDECESSOR OF ATHLON XP.
SPEEDS OF ATHLON CPUS ARE INDICATED BY MHZ(e.g.1000MHZ)BUT ATHLON XP CPUS ARE CALLED BY USING +(e.g.1800+)
