1-There's a rule in LV "pretty girls rule"
2-It doesn't hurt to ask.
3-The $20 trick works, sometimes!
4-If not a suite, take any upgrade you can get, rooms with a strip view are at a premium.
5-Ask in a polite way, humor never hurts, when the desk clerk asks me if I have any special requests, I ask for - "non-smoking, upper floor(some hotels) - beautiful view of the strip - close to the elevators - King bed - mini frig - etc - then I smile, if they smile back at you, you won...If they do find you just such a room, slip them the $20 and thank them..
6-It's going to depend when you're in LV. If you're there for Friday/Saturday night, you can pretty much forget it unless you're a very high roller...If on the other hand it's Sunday through Thursday you have a chance...Beware of conventions, try to go when major conventions aren't in town..The best time of the year to visit LV, as far as room rates and occupancy goes is the 2 weeks before Christmas, this year the 10th-22nd...
7-It does help to have knowledge of the hotel where you're staying..At least that way you will know what to ask for..Some hotels have mini suites/spa suites..They are a big upgrade from ROH rooms...Or the hotel may have rooms with a "special" view. Such as the rooms at Paris which overlook the fountains of Bellagio...
This is the best site for Las Vegas information.
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com go to "VEGAS INFO" hit on "casinos" info/reviews on every hotel/casino in LV...And if that isn't enough information, go to the forum section and ask the experts...The more you know before you go the better your trip..

We have never tipped anyone for a room, but have been asked if we wanted to upgrade for a slight fee several times. We have, however, been upgraded many times just by asking. We have been given suites because it was our first time at a certain hotel, or because we had a certain number of points, or because they had a room available. It really all depends on circumstances, as MJM said, sometimes it depends on what is available when you are checking in. If you feel you are getting good service, you can always tip if you want to, but I would not just fork over the $20 first. I always ask for what I want in a very nice way, and you would be amazed at what that niceness can get you.

If you have a gambling rating at other casinos, you could ask based on your gambling rating either there or at other casinos. If you happen to win $10,000 or more the first night, you might be able to talk them into a suite. If you use your American Express card alot you might have enough points for that.
Other than that I cannot think of a way to ask for an upgrade unless they screw up your reservation and don't have a room for you. Then they might do that. So check in late and see.
Good luck and have fun

Ask when you check in and give the person at least a $20 tip. Sometimes they will just tell you that they can upgrade you for $?? per night, but if the rooms are available, they will usually help you out.

We stayed at Aladdin last year and asked for an upgrade. Told them we were there for our anniversary (which we really were) and then gave the desk clerk a really good tip. I've heard that if you tip them well, they will usually upgrade you. But be generous, don't just give them $5.

I just read (on another posting) about the "twenty dollar trick." I've never tried it, but apparently it has a very high success rate. Check out the website, www.thetwentydollartrick.com. Good luck!
