Most people use the terms interchangeably, but there is a growing difference between the two.
A LAN is a Local Area Network which consists of a few computers located near each other that are networked together. From there, they can connect through a router to other networks, hence the "inter-net", a cross-network of multiple LANs. When most people talk about "wireless internet", what they really mean is a wireless connection to a LAN that provides access to the internet from there. Most wireless LANs use either 802.11b or 802.11g protocols, which have a maximum range of about 1500 feet. The wireless is basically replacing an ethernet cable, but isn't providing access to the internet per se.
That being said, there is growing availability of direct wireless internet access, without an intermediary LAN. Verizon offers this service for a rather hefty monthly fee. You get a special network card that doesn't use the same protocols as most wireless LAN cards, the main difference being that of range. The wireless broadband offered by Verizon offers connectivity over miles, wherever you are in range of a service tower. In these cases, the wireless connection replaces not only the local ethernet but is in fact the ISP.

An access point is any place where you can get internet, whether it be wired or wireless. A router is a little box that makes a bubble of wireless access point, called wi-fi. A router is an access point. A wireless adapter is a little adapter, the size of a pen, that plugs into a computer so that it can use wi-fi. All laptops have no need for wireless adapters, but for desktops, it's incredibly handy. If you have an adapter plugged into your desktop, you don't need to worry about having a big long wire attached to it to get internet. Some adapters can broadcast the signals, but it's a rarity, and I have yet to buy an adapter that claims it can do that. However, some do indeed do that.

Wireless LAN means that you have wireless internet going from your Desktop Computer to your laptop by a wireless bluetooth ubs port chip, but wireless internet means that you are using a cell phone hooked up to your laptop and your using your airtime to surf the web. either way, wireless means just that.

Wireless LAN is when you use a wireless system or LinkSys to connect your computer to other computers, or a network. Wireless internet is when you use a wireless DSL box or a WiFi connection box to connect your computer to the internet.
