The Rolling Stones. They are in no way American and i think that is extremly degrading to probably the second best band of all time. To refer to a british rock act of the 60-70's, the best period in the history of rock music, is an absolute disgrace.
If the stones were too american, then it definately must be The Who. They were about as british as you can get. With their loudness and guitar smashing, drinking, drugs. These guys were the greatest "rock" band of all time, even if their music wasn't as good as other bands. **** everyone that said anything other than the stones or the who. shame on you all. you are not true rockers.
As for the beatles, i don't think we can classify their pop-rock style as true rock. Other wise i would have put them up there.

Yeah, Queen, but I also think of Elbow, who did a classic cover of "Independent Women" by Destiny's Child for Jo Whilley on Radio 1 one Valentine's Day, it was SOOO northern, you could hear the ferrets russling down their trousers ;-)
