I have an old Black & Decker "Quattro Digital" 240v Drill, which I love as it has a cool computer on top of it, but it's gone faulty. One of the brushes wore down and I've replaced them both, but it's still spluttering and cutting out, when I look inside while it's working, there are a great deal of sparks being created where the brushed touch the motor.

Is this normal, and it just needs burning in, or do you think that I've pitted the contacts with the worn-out brush and the motor is done for?

Your armature is pitted. You might be able to take the drill apart and use progressivly finer emory paper to clean it up. Put the armature in another drill and have it running while cleaning. This will insure an even job. Be sure to blow it off to remove any fine metal dust. No guarantees but it's worth a try if you like it so much.

Sounds to me like the armature has a couple of shorted turns. Not much you can do really other than replace the armature. You could check that the brushes are actually firmly down onto the armature commutator. If the armature has a couple of shorted turns the motor will draw more current and is likely to over heat and blow the circuit fuse.

where your brushes touch the com ( the brass looking drum ) you will notice it has lines going down the drum. and the com will be discoloured. you need to cleen this with some wire wool. make sure its isolated first. once you have took the burn/ score mark off try the drill again it may be ok but if not ou either get a new com or a new drill. hope this helps i know how it feels to get attached to your tools some folk just dont understand. goodluck

Sounds like the armature needs replaced, or the electronics are faulty. Send it to B and D.

In engineering those sparks are called "collector sparks"...You need to change your brushes otherwise that motor is done for like you said...
