Or might we be able to call this state of balance contentment, for example? And what is this 'self', as you see it?

The easy medium, yes you could in theory. Whether it's worth or not is for you to decide, imagine that you never feel good, but you never feel bad either. This type of balance is looked to as a possition of enlightenement, but who is really enlightened when they refuse to feel emotions that make you human. Keep in mind, enlightnement comes with thought and expiriences, so being in the balanced state of self would limit your expiriences and you would never be enlightened. The balance is a loop trick though, to keep going back to the same place so to speak. The self is your own image of you internally, it's what you see of yourself. It's your self image. How to do it, well it's not that great anyway so why would you want to know. Keep this in mind too, the path to enlightenement looks similar to thinking your way into depression.
P.S. If your religous refer to the Adam and eve story about the snake in the wisdom tree, you take the wise fruit expect to be bitten, the venom vs. the fruit, what good is it to eat fruit when your already poisened.

I have been quite well balanced for a very long time now. I think I was a teenager when I last lost my balance during a Tae Kwon Do competition.

It's an inner ear and practice thing. You can remain well balanced most of the time but you can always unbalance somebody if you try really hard.

Personally my life will probably never be balanced, I've got too many things on my mind all the time and even if it were it probably wouldn't stay that way for long!

But to answer your question I really think it depends on the person, I could probably live my life in a perpetual state of balance if I didn't have any responsabilities but when you have a job/kids/etc. there are always outside factors ready to throw themselves at you and knock you off course.

It is definitely possible and is also the ultimate goal of every human being. It is the state of perfection or enlightenment. Your true nature is Love, Joy and Piece and it is more powerful than anything else. Nothing negative is more powerful than your Self.

But most people have identified themselves with ego and that is why they forget their original nature. So if we merge with our true nature, nothing can take away joy from us. Various spiritual practices can help you in achieving that like prayers, meditation (most of all), acquiring spiritual knowledge and helping others.

A quicker path is to get detached with all things that are happening. I can't explain it but "The Tao Te Ching" (a scripture of Taoism) explains it quite well enough. It does not mean not loving anybody or not doing what you should be doing, but it means something like not having selfish desires, not expecting fruits from your actions, loving unconditionally and selflessly.

Contentment is as good a name as any other. The self you are concerned about is the mental and emotional self. You have to achieve confidence especially that which comes from demonstrated ability.

I've seen people who are completely at ease when everyone else was running around like mad. He did what needed to be done when it needed to be done and brought order quickly out of disorder without ever raising his voice.

Go through your day consciously. Observe, you own thoughts, feelings, desires, actions, your body and the world around you.

One thing you realize is that you are none of those things! That is very liberating! Now you don't need to be so pre-occupied with them.

Once you are not pre-occupied with them, you can begin to work on things. Bad thought, feeling, desire? See what is at the root of it/them. Ignore it/them. Realize they are not you.

Start focusing on working on something beneficial, without being attached to the results. In the process of the work don't be attached to praise or blame, fame or ridicule, riches or poverty. Just keep your vision, contentment and continue working.

Good, balance and peace will happen!

Peace.

questions... so many kwestions... lets see, balance.....yes you can stay in balance, what works for me is to have a tripod strapped to each leg while wearing a gyroscope on my head.... and the self as I see it, when I look in the mirror, is a short balding man with lopsided ears and only one eyebrow. but thats the self of the image in my mind, is it really what I look like to others though.... hmmmm. You have made me think, now I too have questions of my own to be answered. I wish you luck on your quest for the answers that trouble you so....

by breathing deeply and concentrating you can descend your gravitational centre from the usual just below the stomach to just above the genitals. it makes a lot of difference try Mantak Chia's Cultivating Male Sexuality. The Tao of Love and Sex. Besides all the sexual disciplines it's really practical for self therapy

Yes but only when everything is heading towards its own unique perfect destiny. Just as a knife fulfils its purpose by cutting well, human beings are fulfilled and happy when they are functioning well.
