Hey there Cassie,
Hmm.. and intersting question, but a question that cant really be answered by anybody else other than yourself :)
From where i come from (India), Schooling is viewed as a process through which a child mingles with peers of same / varied interests and learns to cope with hardships. THe purpose of school mainly being to teach us how to learn :).
COmpetitions range from the usual Debates, Karate Tournaments to getting admission into well reputed instituions. To realize that the world isnt made for us and that we should be made for the world requires certain experiences that can be faced during the schooling. ANd the assurance of engaging with a similar experience on day to day basis would either be rare or too intense a situation (FOr example, a car jack ... [j/k] :) )
Putting up with people seems to be the thing that all of the leading companies look for in leaders. In schools, you come across all sortsa specimens, big, small, smart, dumb... but most importantly.. the ill-minded and the ill-wishers.
TO be strong enough to face actual obstacles, we need to gradually pick up our mental stamina and power. THAT aspect in particular would ensure our sustainment in the future (at least the safety ;P )
I guess i wouldnt be able to keep at this answer much longer because i am yet to find out how useful school WOULD be in my life ahead of me :P
Hope the next two years of schooling turns out to be fruitful :)
Yours always,

The half full answer: A good education expands your ability to solve problems and think analytically. Ideally your writing and numerical skills are improved as well. In a post modern economy these skills are required to gain employment, cloth, feed and shelter yourself. In the best case scenario you are extremely excited about the opportunity to learn and want to contribute to a field of study. You see yourself as a life long learner.
The half empty answer: School has become a gating function to seperate the potentially useful employees from the dweebs. Almost any position requires you to have at least some post high school education now. Many people rush through university to get their piece of paper and learn next to nothing. They then ***** and complain that they have crappy jobs and crappy bosses.

Its not required but for most people they need it to require the knowledge and skills needed to start their career. Without school we wouldnt be able to obtain those skills or the basis for those skills. Most professional jobs require that you have a degree. School also shows that you have the commitment toward excellence and the discipline that you took to complete the however many years you took to get the degree. School's not required, nobody forces you to go to school but for majority of people its allows them a chance to be successful.

It isn't. Some people can be successful without college. But for most people, college, and usually a Masters Degree, is a must for getting the best jobs. Most large companies will not promote anyone who doesn't have the proper credentials. Just a fact of life.

So we can learn what we need to be successful. Like, how to talk and write and read. Of course, most high school graduates cant do any of that well!!!! But Im homeschooled, in 12th grade, 16, and on college level........so there you go

to learn? you dont need school to be successful at the life part, like the tricks you learn on your own by doing stuff outside of school, if you know what i mean.. like street smarts, but to be good at the jobs the world has to offer you have to go to school, to be good at a job, not directly good at life. just appreciate the education and knowledge that you are offered, dont question it.

School shouldn't be required to be successful in life. It TRULY depends on what one persons definition of "success" is and for many people (not my definition) it means...school, college, great job, lots of material possessions.
There are so many ways to learn in the world other than going to school, real and natural ways of learning. Sadly, many people are brainwashed into thinking that school is necessary to learn when it isn't. Nor is school necessary to teach people social skills, that is proposterous! People learn social skills by being involved with their community, friends, family, neighbors, etc.
My children do not go to school, success to me isn't going to college, if they want to go to college, I will provide the necessaties to ensure that they can go. Success to me means raising healthy, happy, joyful children who love learning, who will be what they want to be, etc.
For thousands of years, man managed to progress without formal schooling and they will continue to do so, whether people think it can be done or not. Not going to school doesn't mean that people will not learn anymore, we are born curious creatures by nature...forced schooling squashes that natural and innate desire for numerous people and in effect kills the love of learning.
