Yes and no.
You can save files such as word or mp3's no problem
if you try saving the whole hard drive on a dvd and then copy it back, the files will copy back.
You cant guarentee that various programs will work or that the correct drivers are installed for you hardware. This is due to the regestry no being copied.
Also if the computer crashes, simply install a new copy of windows onto the machine. it will overwrite the old copy, but save the other files and programs. You may find that certain virus remain though and other programs will believe that they dont exist etc.
Doing this will allow you to copy the 'important' documents onto a dvd. then formatt the hard drive to remove all viruses/spyware. install a fresh copy of windows and a virus checker.
virus check the dvd. then copy all virus free files to your hard drive

If you mean Hard Drive not drine, then you can surely make a backup, Norton Ghost is a good software that takes an image of your hard drive including windows and installed software in-case of a crash or something happened you can restore your PC to the same state the backup taken at.

One little spelling mistake and every smartarse comes out of the closet!!!

The very best software to back up your whole PC is Acronis True Image. This really is better that Norton Ghost. Check reviews. You will need a portable hard drive to back up to. If your PC hard drive is 80gb, buy a 100gb portable drive. Backing up really is a straightforward process. You can use media like DVD's but you will need a lot.

Alternatively, you could just back up your My Documents (which is a good idea anyway). If your PC drive does crash, you would need to re-install all software but you would at least have all your files intact. Again, you could use DVD's but I would suggest a portable drive.

Hope this helps

Norton Ghost is your best option, it has an option to compress the Clone image that it creates of the drive. You can backup up the drive to an image file, or partition to partition, or partition to image file on another drive.
