I don't think all conservatives have a problem with Civil Unions. I actually know quite a few who are fine with them. I think their issue more lies in the tradition of "marriage". For those who do have a problem, they probably feel it lessens their marriage or degrades the institution, which they feel has been between a man and a woman since the foundation.

I, myself, don't see why not.

in their minds I think allowing civil unions will devalue their ideal of marriage which is based on religion.
I personally think that all marriage is a civil contract already, and that we are simply asking for equal rights for all consenting adults to be able to enter into that civil contract of marriage.
I fully agree with Justine, separate but equal is NOT equal.

Over 1/2 of US households are non-traditional now. Studies have shown that those children raised in traditional families (married mom and dad) fare better in life than those raised in non-traditional families. Civil unions may help to further erode the standing of traditional marriage in society. Just one thought.

I don't know, but even I as a liberal have a major problem with Civil Unions.

They're not "Marriages."

They are against loads of things when you think about it : immigrants, gays, women's lib, working hours (always more), enivromnent ....
