That is a two sided coin. There are two goals in economics. First, we want to achieve economies of scale meaning that companies are large enough so that they do not face the inefficiencies of smaller companies. Bigger companies have more resources than smaller ones. The other goal is competition. These goals seem to be at odds, but they are not. There is a balance that can be achieved. Take retail. The GAP, J. Crew, and Limited are all big companies with economies of scale, but they are highly competitive against one another. In other words, supermarkets are not bad as long as they are still subject to competition.

In the grand scheme of shopping, even ancient merchants understood the need to combine their efforts and form a public center devoted to buying and selling. Our modern malls and supermarkets are simply the modern incarnation of the bazaars of ancient days. Every hamlet used to to have a centralized location for buying and selling.
Our post WWII economy has put the deciding factors in the hands of the consumers: the more we buy, the better the economy. Malls help to achieve that directive.
Culturally speaking the mall, which was originally designed to get product to the masses, has helped to detiorate our choices. The Gap, J-Crew, Abercrombie and Fitch all sell similar products. Those who shop solely at the local mall will all dress the same, smell the same, have the same designer cell phones, eat the same cinnabon, etc. But as long as we buy, we survive.

The little Mom and Pop stores cant compete with the big discount stores, so they close one by one. Want to help? Buy from the small guy, even if you have to pay a little more.
