MOST LIKELY problem is a poor ground connection at the rear of the car OF the turn signal switch has failed. The turn signal switch is a part of the brake lamp circuit because when the turn signals are in use, the brake lights are also subject to use, and the turn signal switch interrupts the brake lights on the side that the signal is working. The Collision Avoidance light isn't a part of that circuit, as it doesn't flash with either side.

Good Luck

Ironhand said it perfect... But my experience has been turn signal switches on these cars.. actually had one where it was the plug in on the turn signal switch itself.

Also check the sockets the bulbs go into.. had problems on another contour/mystique that was caused by that (but usually it's the turn signal switch)
