The 360 restaurant at the top of the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada. It is a revolving restaurant, taking 72 minutes to rotate fully. The CN Tower is the tallest free-standing building in the world, at 1815 feet, so the views from the restaurant were amazing. And the food and drink was delicious.

Le Gavroche in London. I had no idea that this was where I was being taken for a special birthday lunch and it was a total surprise when, after trotting up and down several streets near Marble Arch Station we stopped outside a discreet plaque bearing that legendary name. We met with an unexpected hitch, however. My husband had booked, but when the restaurant rang him at work to confirm, his (temporary) secretary told them that as he had taken the day off, he presumably wouldn't be turning up and had cancelled the reservation! The restaurant was crowded, but Michel Roux made sure that a table was somehow fitted in for us and from then on it was utter bliss. Perfect food, perfect service and a large bill at the end of it all, but a feeling that this was a lunch and a birthday to remember for ever.

Either Don Giovanni or Piatti's in Napa Valley. Excellent food and ambience either place. I still remember the raviolis and melon and champagne dessert.

Nicholas in Atlanta. Five stars, expensive, and worth making the reservation six months in advance.
