Yes! I was told that anytime you travel over 20+ miles out of your service area you should power off your phone and turn it back on. I was also told you should tunr off your phone at least every other day. It has something to do with your phone getting "stuck" on a tower.

Yes, that can happen for a number of reasons:
a) Low network coverage: Please note that text messages do not travel on the same channel as that of voice so there is no inter realtion with the number of bars you have on your phone and your phones capability to send/receive text messages. As the channels are different, one may have a problem being up.
b) An error in your phones text message software: This is very difficult to find and it corrects itself by closing the text message and trying again. Analogous to an application failure on the computer
c) Text Gateway message unreadable: All text messages go the Text Gateway. In an event that the gateway does not send an acknowledgement to the phone that it has successfully got the message, the phone informs user that the message has failed. The gateway can become overloaded due to high volume

More reasons are out there, but then I would have to write a small book to explain all of them technically :)

yea it happends all the time to me. all i do is try again because usually that means i dont have good service or the network is busy meaning about a billion other people are trying to send a text all at the sametime and the network cannot handle all of them at once.
