I always loved Columbo!

Even though the viewer knew "who dunnit" from the start, the way Columbo fitted the pieces together was always a mystery unilt the end!!!

Aloha from Down Unda!

'TV" Detective is "Detective Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio), is a quirky yet extraordinarily intelligent investigator and criminal profiler, known for his instinct and insight. Often, Goren's intuition turns out to be the case-breaker, rather than solid evidence (which is usually the case in the other two series). Each episode, Goren typically employs his knowledge of an unusually wide range of topics, from theoretical physics to (multiple) foreign languages. Goren once served in the Criminal Investigation Division, stationed in Germany and South Korea. The Bobby Goren character is very reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes; he notices tiny — yet important — details ignored by others, and has broad encyclopedic knowledge. Frequently, Goren obtains crucial information and confessions by psychologically manipulating and provoking suspects, and suspects' associates." [Quoted from Wikipedia L&OCI charactor analyisis]

I couldn't have said it better...all other answers so far are extrodinairly short sighted & fully lame! Catch a clue! I love Tom Selleck & Magnum & Jerry Orbach & the original L& O team & would vote for that Cold Case Girl before Columbo! Where's Elliot Ness or Marshall Dillon? Most 'detectives' are comedic characters, not detectives! Even Monk is kewl & better than Pierot, Marple, Frost or the rest of the cliches! In fact, Inspector Rex is better than Jessica Fletcher! Ruff Ruff! 8-o

It has to be Jim Rockford. Tom Selleck got his big break by doing 2 episodes of the Rockford files playing a character called Lance White and Tom Selleck has said he learned how to do Magum by working on the Rockford files. Also David Chase got his first job writing for the Rockford files and he has gone on to create and produce the Sopranoes.
The thing i liked best was even though James Garner was a big guy he was regularly getting betten up on the show he wasn't one of those super hero cops that never gets hurt he was always getting hurt.
