It seems the higher up the ladder you go, the more responsibility you have with less grunt work. What do CEOs actually do to earn such high outrageous salaries?

Crap all over the corporate officers until they cry. They in turn pass it on down the line. CEO's of course get jerked around by investment bankers so it is all good :-) Seriously, they are usually people who have been in the company for years and years without any material screwups and know almost every aspect of the business. The money keeps them from bailing out and taking all of their institutional knowledge with them.

They're responsible for 'steering the company.' In addition they are the face of the company. They have to answer to the stockholders when the company fails to make its projections. They have to deal with the press and stir good public relations. Certainly it may seem as though some are overpaid, and some are - not all though. As people rise up the corporate ladder they get paid better, and (seemingly) do less. However the stress level is exponentially higher for the CEO than say the mail room clerk.

How much is stress worth to you?

CEOs mainly do the long term plan for the corporation they are in and their main role is to get the target (vision) they set in the plan and that called the mission and they are all the time reading the reports that gives them the allover view for the company activity to see if that matching their plan or they are in need to change the way of implementing the plan

Assessing the long term plan is the strategic work or the CEOs job

The CEO articulates the strategic vision for the corporation, presents a role for others to identify with and follow. It is also the responsibility of the CEO to communicate high performance standards and show confidence in his subordinates abilities to meet these standards.

Quite often, the CEO's first job, is starting the business from scratch - turning a home-busniess into a multi-billion dollar industry.

So they are people who are paid "TO GET IT RIGHT". Simply put, they are paid to make the correct decisions - decisions which can make or break a company.
